Book Review: Hotel on the corner of bitter and sweet by Jamie Ford

Publisher – Alison and Busby Ltd 2012

First published in hardback in 2011

Genre: Fiction

ISBN: 978-0-7490-1072-0

This triple-award winning novel is magnificent.  I loved it.

This book really brings to life the conflicts of chinese and japanese living in America during WWII.  This is done very cleverly by telling the story of forbidden love between Henry and Kaiko and their struggle to keep this love alive after Kaiko and her family get sent to internment camp.

The contrast between Henry’s parents and Kaiko’s parents is a brilliant addition to the plot.  Sheldon and Mrs. Beatty are also wonderful characters which add extra dimensions to the story.

It is set in 1986 when a hotel being restored is discovered to hold the hidden possessions of 37 Japanese families sent to internment camps and Henry sets out to determine if any of these were Kaiko’s.  This brings all his childhood memories flooding back in his flashback memories of those war years.

It is a very cleverly crafted book that will stir your emotions and pique your interest, you will not want to set it down until its conclusion is reached.

Personal read 5/5 I loved it.

Group Read 5.5 Much to discuss.

    • Hi Jamie,
thanks for the comments. I haven’t started writing my books yet, I have only done a few short stories which can be found under the heading ‘writing exercises.
All the best on the next book, I would be interested in reading it.
