This was one of the more interesting murder/mystery novels I have read recently.  The plot revolves around police Detective Nick Marconi who is suffering from severe depression and unresolved grief issues so his superiors send him to see a psychiatrist – Gracie Simmons.

Gracie has her own unresolved issues but she is determined to help others.  They fall in love but this is a problem in itself because of the patient/practitioner dynamic.  Nick also has a series of murders to solve, women who he has previously dated are being murdered in a most gruesome manner and he has to work out who is trying to wreak revenge on him before any more women die.

Gracie’s present difficulties mean he is simultaneously trying to keep her safe, her ex-boyfriend is harassing her, one of the murder victims is her best friend and she feels personally responsible for the mental health of all her patients.

The characters are wonderful, they feel like old friends and seasoned characters even though this was the first time I had met them.  The two intertwining plots are woven together masterfully.

I really liked the pieces of dialogue at the beginning of some chapters which were transcripts of conversations between Gracie and one of her patients, this was a clever way of introducing another characters point of view.

I rate this book 5/5 – I loved it.
