book review – the help by Kathryn Stockett
Publisher: Penguin books – 2010
genre: fiction
ISBN: 978-0-141-03928-2
This book took a little bit of getting into but once I did I loved it. It gives a brilliant insight into the lives of black maids and their white ‘mistresses’. The plot and sub-plot are both well constructed and work excellently together.
The characters are all extremely well-drawn and all are unique. They are all also true to life, I empathized with a few of the characters and really disliked Miss Hilly.
The situation the maids find themselves in are very realistic and the bravery shown was remarkable.
I was very pleased that there were some truly happy outcomes for some of the characters and that Miss Hilly got her comeuppance.
The writing style is really good as it is written in different characters voices, the colloquial language of the maids sounds true and the speech of Skeeter is clear, the definition of each character is very well done.
I give this book 5/5 stars – I loved it.
I plan to read this soon.
Let me know what you think when you have.
